Update to Bituminous Sprayed Seal Specifications

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is proposing an update to bituminous sprayed seal specifications in its March 2022 publication cycle and we seek your feedback. Please note the proposed changes are incremental updates to TMR’s existing specifications and not related to a decision by TMR about its Sprayed Seal Review or a decision about the way forward for seal delivery. Further advice regarding TMR’s Sprayed Seal Review will be provided in due course.

In summary, proposed changes include:

  • introduce the option to use Class 170 bitumen blended with 5 or 10 parts crumb rubber in certain cases
  • introduce the option to use Class 240 bitumen in certain cases
  • include some additional information about cutting rates
  • include additional requirements related to bituminous material wash-off
  • include additional requirements and information related to sprayer nozzles for various binders and non-uniform binder application
  • include guidance to identify and deal with the problem of non-uniform binder applications such as ‘tram-tracking’
  • include the option to require the use of Intelligent Construction (IC) rollers in specified circumstances
