Public Works Professionals Orientation (PWPO)

This two-day Intensive provides an understanding of the industry to support new professionals joining the public works sector at any stage of their career. Designed in consultation with industry, the program provides big-picture context and essential knowledge to assist professionals to competently navigate the sector.

This program is designed for professionals working in any organisation (government and non-government) involved in the public works sector, in particular professionals new to the industry, including:

  • Recent graduates
  • Contractors undertaking public works projects
  • Professionals moving between private and public sector organisations


  • sector-wide information and knowledge, allowing employees to become familiar and comfortable with the sector more quickly than by work experience alone,
  • provides context on how the public works sector enhances the quality of life for Queensland communities, and how they can contribute,
  • increases understanding of the relationships between public and private organisations
  • builds resiliency, enthusiasm, and pride for working in the sector
  • supports attraction and retention strategies
  • includes up to one year of complimentary IPWEAQ Membership giving professionals access to information specific to public works professionals


PWPO is delivered over two days at IPWEAQ's facilities in Brisbane (Public Works Professionals):

Day one

  • Roles and responsibilities of each level of government
  • Community expectations - levels of service and communication
  • Record keeping and governance
  • Engineering a sustainable future - smart cities, innovation and circular economies
  • Managing natural disasters
  • Critical thinking
  • Native title and cultural heritage
  • Art Exhibition evening & social networking opportunity with other art exhibition guests

Day two

  • Networking Breakfast
  • Networks and involvement in the sector
  • Site strategies - for the human factor
  • Managing infrastructure assets
  • Career opportunities and goal setting
  • Site visit
  • Project management
