Enhancing the quality of life for all Queensland communities

The Erosion and Sediment Control Level 1 course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to assist them with installing and maintaining various erosion, sediment and drainage control measures onsite and comply with project and legislative requirements surrounding Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC).

The content of this course is based on the “Best Practice Erosion and Sediment Control” (IECA, 2008) and has been designed to provide practical instruction on how to implement control measures in an effective and compliant manner.

This course has been designed for workers involved in construction and maintenance activities that may result in soil erosion and sediment runoff, including, but not limited to:

  • Construction and maintenance staff
  • Leading hands
  • Supervisors
  • Inspectors
  • Project Managers
  • Contractor
  • Engineers

Introduction to the issue of erosion and consequences of sedimentation on our environment
Overview of relevant legislation
Forms of erosion and erosion drivers

Review control measures, used onsite
Discussion on their performance & limitations
Basic construction and maintenance requirements for all types of sediment controls
Overview of sediment basin operation, treatment and maintenance requirements

Use of clean and dirty water diversion drains to manage runoff and control erosion generation.
Comparison of drain lining options and rock check dams
Works within a waterway and temporary crossings

Using erosion control techniques to manage soil stockpiles, stabilised site access, temporary work areas and to achieve final site stabilisation.
Comparison of various erosion control products performance, suitability for nominated works and installation and maintenance requirements.

Attendees will gain:

  • an awareness of the impacts of poor onsite ESC management on the receiving           environment
  • a basic understanding of responsibilities and requirements within relevant                 legislation
  • an awareness of what is considered best practice for managing ESC and the               associated limitations
  • an appreciation of why some erosion and sediment control techniques are more         effective than others
  • an understanding of basic construction and maintenance requirements for                 drainage, erosion and sediment control measures
  • a practical knowledge of sediment basin operation and maintenance
